If source of TV signal is via RF, what good does Component Video do from that point on?
Probably a stupid question … same would apply to Composite, S-Video, HDMI. Why use them from my cable box to my HDTV, if the original signal to the cable box is RF? How can the other cable technologies “improve” the signal?
It is an excellent question. RF can carry an HD signal and if you connect it directly to your TV, if your TV has a QAM tuner it will be able to decode it just fine.
The problem is that the RF output in set-top boxes is targeting old TVs, so the signal is downconverted to analog SD. That’s why it is better to use HDMI or component output.
